Project Update: Bonneville

Used to look like this…

Upon arriving home from a little field trip to New York last week, some long-ago ordered parts were waiting on the workbench.  These allowed me to finally clean up the front end on the Bonneville just a little.

Really all pretty easy stuff–relocated the voltage regulator from behind the headlight to down over the oil cooler, pulled the front end and forks to get rid of the silly headlight ears, bolted up an LSL switch bracket for the ignition key assembly, and used a British Customs headlight bracket to mount the smaller bottom mount headlight I got from Dime City.  Now it looks like this:

After the front end ‘clean-up’

Still need to suss out the mirror/gauge/front turn signal situation, but this being the wild unregulated madness that is Florida, I am not living of fear of persecution from the authorities (who generally focus on the pink-helmet-mohawk crew on GSXR’s) and I’ve been riding it as is for the past few days.  I’m wavering on installing fork gaiters, only because it seems like too obvious a thing for a bike like this (along with pipe-wrap) and I really would like to keep it clean.

Now that I have that behind me, I’d love to do essentially the same thing to the back end of the bike–and THEN, the pipes!  All in good time….

  1. What did you do about the wiring inside the stock headlight. I recently had a run in with an suv on the interstate so have quite a few parts to replace. I’m planning on going to that same setup with parts from Dime City and BC as well.

    • Sorry to hear about your unfortunate SUV encounter–that sucks. The wiring was by far the worst part of the project–I wish I had an easy solution for you. Short answer is that I relocated the wiring back up under the gas tank (the longer answer is that there really isn’t enough room for all that wire under the tank). I just ‘made it work’ for now with the intention of breaking out the soldering iron and wire cutters and doing a more complete job when I wasn’t depending on the bike for daily transportation. It WILL all fit under the tank, you just have to route things carefully, and trim out several feet of ‘extra’ wire!
